About this experience
Explore some of Northern Jordan’s historical and ancient treasures and ruins on this private day tour to Jerash, Ajloun, and Umm Qais.
Head towards Jerash; one of Jordan’s most important Roman Sites. The area’s high point was during Roman rule (in 63 BC), and it has been inhabited for more than 6500 years. Admire temples, theaters, colonnaded plazas as well as an amphitheater, and discover settlements dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Proceed to Umm Qais, which was previously known as Gadara; mostly known for the famous miracle f the Gadarene swine. It was also a home and cultural center for many poets and philosophers. Discover this ancient city, its colonnaded streets, terraces, and ruins.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
I’d choose this private northern Jordan day out if you want to put Jerash at the centre of your plans, then decide how much variety and how long a day you want around it. The useful feature is not simply that it strings together major historic places: it offers one-, two- and three-site versions, so you can avoid treating a long sightseeing day as a test of endurance. Expect a driver-led private trip rather than an automatically guided archaeological tour, and plan your priorities accordingly.
Who this day suits best
This is a strong fit for independent-minded travellers who value a private vehicle, hotel collection and the freedom to explore ruins at their own pace. Jerash is the anchor: its colonnaded streets, public spaces, temples and amphitheatre give the day a substantial classical-history focus. Ajloun adds a markedly different medieval fortress setting, while Umm Qais broadens the itinerary with the remains of ancient Gadara, including streets and terraces.
I think it is especially sensible for solo travellers, couples or small private groups who would rather have a driver manage the inter-site travel than join a fixed coach schedule. The vehicle includes water, Wi-Fi and phone charging, practical comforts on a day with considerable time between stops.
Choose the number of sites honestly
My advice is to pick Jerash Only if you want time to absorb one large archaeological site without watching the clock; it is the five-hour option. Choose Jerash & Ajloun when a Roman city and a hilltop castle sound like the most satisfying contrast, but you do not want to commit to the full three-stop circuit. Jerash & Umm Qais makes more sense for travellers drawn most strongly to ancient urban landscapes rather than a fortress.
I’d reserve the three-site choice for people who are happy with a full, changeable day and see the value in range over depth. The listed overall duration spans five to eight hours, and the two-site choices are each described as eight hours, so adding or swapping a stop is not necessarily a shortcut to a leisurely pace.
Build in interpretation, rather than assuming it
The key trade-off is that the trip provides an English-speaking driver, not a guided tour of the sites. That can be ideal if you enjoy self-directed wandering and want the private transport to remain flexible. But if the historical layers at Jerash, Ajloun or Umm Qais are the main reason you are going, I’d budget separately for a local guide at the site that matters most to you. This is the clearest way to turn a scenic ruins day into a more informed visit without paying for guidance you may not need at every stop.
Entry fees are also separate. A Jordan Pass is recommended in the trip information and is presented as covering entry to numerous sites as well as Petra, so I’d consider its wider value across your Jordan itinerary rather than viewing it as a decision for this day alone.
Pace the day around heat, food and flexibility
I’d aim for an early start if you choose a multi-site version. Traveller feedback specifically highlights arriving at Jerash by 8am to avoid heat and crowds, while also noting a day that ran from early morning until nearly 4pm without a lunch stop. Bringing food from your hotel is a sensible practical choice if you prefer not to gamble on finding time mid-route.
Private transport appears to be the real pacing advantage here: feedback describes drivers adapting timing when needed, and the itinerary allows for customisable sites. Still, do not mistake flexibility for unlimited time. Decide before departure whether your priority is lingering at Jerash, climbing through Ajloun Castle, or giving Umm Qais the attention its larger-than-expected site can demand.

Explore some of Jordan’s historical treasures on this full-day private tour to Jerash, Ajloun, and Umm Qais from Amman.
Head towards Jerash and delve into its rich history as you explore its colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, amphitheater, public squares, plazas, and temples. Jerash is one of the best preserved classical sites; a rich and prosperous Greek and Roman city. It was founded by Alexander the Great around 331 BC, it later became one of the great Decapolis cities of the east. It is also a Bronze settlement where you can find the Temple of Artemis, the Forum, the oval plaza, as well as Hadrian’s Arch. Learn about the city and how it rose with a Greek federation, and then lived through the Muslim and Christian rule, which eventually fell during the Crusades.
Proceed to Ajloun and visit the Ajloun Castle; a 12th Century fortress built by the forces of Saladin against the Crusaders. It was built to dominate the 3 major passages into northwest Jordan. This hilltop edifice is a striking example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture. The structures, towers, chambers, galleries, and staircases that form part of the town, as well as the beautiful scenery that surrounds the hills nearby, will captivate you for sure. Climb into the tower and look around to take in the historical atmosphere and delve into the picturesque views of the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea.
Later on, drive towards Umm Qais; one of the most stunning Greco-Roman cities. Learn about the ruins of the Decapolis city of Gadara, now known as Umm Qais. This place is stunning due to the contrast and juxtaposition of the Roman Ruins with the abandoned Ottoman-era village. Take in the breathtaking views from an extraordinary vantage point, with views of 3 countries; Jordan, Syria, and the Israel and Palestinian Territories. According to the Bible, it is the site of the famous miracle of the Gadarene swine; when Jesus cast down the demons out of 2 men into a herd of pigs.
Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman, where your tour ends with a drop-off at any central location of your choosing.
Once the tour is completed, the journey back to your hotel will start.
